As we moved into the summer, I started to notice a lot of people asking the question: How often should I do yoga?

If you’re getting serious about yoga, you may be wondering how often you should do it so you don’t overdo it or underdo it. In fact, yoga is not much different from other types of workouts you can do.

First determine objectives

Every time you do something, it is advisable to have a goal. Why? That way, you can plan your route to that destination accordingly and make sure you don’t get lost. So the first thing you need to do is determine what you want to get out of your yoga class.

You may have your own personal reasons for doing yoga, but I think the most common are: Improve your agility, lose weight, gain muscle mass, relax, reduce stress or just stay in shape in general. Some want the full package: Meditation, philosophy and physical training. As for myself, my goals are to make my workouts more balanced, increase my flexibility and become more aware of my body.

Be consistent!

Whatever your goals are, the most important thing is to be consistent. Seriously, I can’t stress this enough because this has been the hardest thing for me in all my athletic or training aspirations. If you want to achieve a goal, make the journey to that goal part of your life. If you want to improve your mind, body and soul through yoga, you need to make sure that you practice it regularly.

My practical advice is to do it at least once a week. Doing yoga once every two weeks will not do you any good, because it will take your body too much time to develop muscles and flexibility. The only exception may be if your goal is simply relaxation or meditation, because in that case the focus is on the mind and not the body. Personally, I set a goal to do yoga twice a week. Nothing more, nothing less.

Stay cool – manage your driving

The mistake I should not make is to waste all my enthusiasm in the first few weeks. So I force myself not to do yoga more or less often than I should. I have decided to do yoga only twice a week due to personal and lifestyle goals (I want to improve my flexibility and become more body aware as a counterbalance to the other workouts I do). So for me, twice a week a yoga class is perfect.

When you determine and set up your own training program, make sure it is realistic. I know it sounds boring, but I think it’s best to start with a light exercise and then increase the frequency and intensity as you progress. If you put all your enthusiasm and energy into yoga the first week, you might not have the energy to go to the ashram the next week. Also, don’t overlook the fact that you can hurt yourself if you move too fast in the beginning. After all, yoga exercises are just like any other human activity. If you take it seriously, it will eventually become a habit, and then it will be really fun!

Your body sets the limits

Clearly, beginners are much more likely to go too far than yogis and advanced practitioners. Just like any other workout, you need to consider your physical capabilities when doing yoga. If yoga is new to you and you’re not in good physical shape, don’t overdo it by taking a tough class every day. Instead of feeling relaxed and peaceful, you may start to feel exhausted.

I’ve been strength training for over 10 years now, but whenever I’ve had a break of more than 3-4 weeks, I’ve always been quieter for the first week or two when I resume training. Every time I ignored this rule, I had to take a few weeks off because I overused or even strained my ligaments.

A good way to start your yoga practice gently and gradually is to do warm-up exercises at home. When you go to the gym or ashram to start or continue a workout, tell the trainer you want to take it easy today. From there, you can move on to a harder exercise with a higher difficulty level and fewer problems. It depends on the individual, but as mentioned earlier, consistency in yoga practice is the key to real progress.

Remember that your efforts are directly proportional to the results. I’m not saying you should do yoga as often as possible, but you should know how often and WHY you are doing it. Set realistic goals, be consistent, manage your enthusiasm and don’t overstep your boundaries.
