Daikon radish or Chinese radish, known as jie qiao in Chinese, is a member of the daikon family and is much like a radish or a turnip with a white, crunchy skin. Daikon radish is one of the most popular vegetables in China. You will find it in soups, stews, stir-fries, braises, sauces, hot pots, salads, and stir-fried dishes. It has a mild, sweet flavor. Besides, it is high in dietary fiber and contains vitamins A and C. It is also a good source of potassium and a good source of thiamine. It is also rich in beta-carotene.

This classic Asian recipe uses spiralized oriental radishes as noodles!

You’ve probably heard of zucchini noodles, but have you ever heard of pasta? The noodles are made from a very long white radish called daikon or oriental radish. The mild flavor of daikon radishes makes them a great alternative to zucchini for many low-carb pasta dishes. In addition, daikon radishes are known to release less moisture when cooked, so they retain their al dente texture exceptionally well.

These sesame noodles make a great quick meal!

Because spiralized daikon radishes are less watery than zucchini, they can be prepared ahead of time. Plus, it’s easy to save leftovers. I find this pasta recipe tastes better the next day.


Low-carb daikon noodles with sesame

Oriental radishes become noodles in this classic Asian dish! —> Note that extra time is needed for the pasta to cool and marinate.

  • 1 large daikon radish (about 1.5 pounds)
  • 1 teaspoon avocado oil (or your favorite vegetable oil)
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce (you can substitute tamari or coconut aminos)
  • 1/4 cup high quality sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar c.c.
  • 1 tablespoon of erythritol, confectionary
  • 1 teaspoon chili garlic sauce (found in the Asian section), optional for flavor and spice.

Wash and peel the daikon radish. Cut the ends off, halve them and spiral them. (I use the fine noodle setting). Cut the noodles to the desired length.


Heat the avocado oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the daikon noodles and cook for 3-5 minutes, stirring carefully so they cook evenly. The pasta will soften and shrink slightly, but remain al dente. Transfer the pasta to a colander to drain and cool slightly.


In a small bowl, whisk together the sesame oil, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, erythritol and chili garlic sauce. Set it aside.


Dry the dried pasta on a few paper towels to remove any residual moisture. Place the noodles in a medium bowl and brush with the sesame marinade. Let the pasta marinate for at least 10 minutes, stirring well. After marinating, pour the excess marinade that has not soaked into the paste into the bowl.


Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds, if desired. Serve with extra chili garlic sauce. Have fun!
