In 2010, a group of physicians wrote a damning report about the low-fat diet craze called Dietary Fats and Cardiovascular Disease , and the controversy it started has been raging ever since. A major reason behind the report’s findings was the lack of evidence that had been published about the low-fat diet.
Gary Taubes is a Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and Physiology at New York University and a long-time advocate of eating low-fat, and that is what he talks about in this podcast. He doesn’t argue against taking individual responsibility, but rather against the overall theory that “modern foods, industrially produced, refined and packaged, are the enemy of health.”
Gary Taubes is an author, journalist for the New York Times, and recipient of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Taubes is also quite well known for his controversial stance on sugar as a major contributor to modern disease. He’s been on the Atkins diet since its inception, and claims to have lost 100 pounds over the past decade by lowering his carb intake and increasing his exercise. In an interview with “Epicurious”, Taubes claims that his diet and exercise routine allow him to live a healthier life for the same money he would have spent on a large hamburger and fries each day.. Few persons have contributed more to the understanding of low-carb diets than investigative journalist Gary Taubes. While Dr. Atkins is credited with popularizing the low-carb strategy in the 1970s, Taubes is credited with reigniting the flame with his 2002 essay “What if it’s all been a big fat lie?” and subsequent book “Good Calories, Bad Calories.”
