If you’ve been trying to test your ketones (a by-product of fat breakdown) to determine if you’re doing well on a ketogenic diet, you’ve got a few options. You can use strips and check your blood ketones every few hours, or you can do it by hand and keep track of the ketones in a urine sample. The latter is the most accurate method of testing. But, there’s a way to make it easier on yourself and quicker to test results.

Ketones are fat-based chemicals that are produced when your body runs out of glucose, the main energy source for your body. Your body converts fat into ketones to be used as energy. You can test your ketones by using a blood meter to measure the amount of ketones in your blood.

MCTs, also known as medium chain triglycerides, are a special type of saturated fat that your body can easily break down into ketones. The ketones are derived from your body starting with the fat in your diet. The ketones your body produces are a source of energy for your cells, especially the brain. When you exercise, you release free fatty acids and other substances that create the feeling of being full. When these substances are not used, they are removed from the blood stream by the liver, which changes the blood chemistry and leads to a low level of ketones. It is easy to tell if you are in ketosis when you are getting the ketone test strips used to measure ketone levels.

The presence of ketones in the blood… Ketones in the pee… Ketones in the breath Ketones are present in abundance while you’re in ketosis. Is it necessary to measure them? What’s to stop you? This is objective feedback, which has the potential to motivate. Perhaps understanding your physiological level can motivate you to achieve your objective. Or it might be a confirmation that you’ve already arrived. Regardless, knowledge is power.

Ketone analysis is a simple and inexpensive procedure. However, it may be both expensive and intrusive. There are three major types of exams, each with its own set of benefits and drawbacks. From one version to the next, the variables of accuracy, price, and quality vary considerably. This article will address any questions you may have about which technique is ideal for you.

I evaluated four ketone meters that detect blood ketone levels in a prior guide. I’m going to compare the keto mojo gadget, which won this test, to other choices in each of the other two test categories: ketones in breath and ketones in urine.

I will assess each participant on three criteria, similar to the blood ketone body test: precision, pricing, and quality. There will be no obvious winner in the end, but you will be able to weigh your choices and trade-offs honestly. You are the only one who can choose which technique is best for you.

1. There are three different kinds of ketone tests. Urine, blood, and breath

Each ketone detection technique examines a distinct aspect of the ketone: -hydroxybutyrate levels are measured in blood tests, acetone levels are measured in breath tests, and acetoacetate levels are measured in urine. During fat metabolism, ketones such as hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate, and acetone are generated. Ketones are produced when fat is burned. As a result, these three components may be signs of ketosis.

All three components are present in my blood while I’m on ketones. Because some acetoacetate molecules are eliminated in the urine, I can use their concentration to estimate blood ketone levels. Because acetone is tiny enough to travel through the bloodstream and into the lungs, minute quantities may be found in exhaled air.

A direct comparison of the two techniques is impossible due to the differences in each approach and the lack of a linear connection between the various ketone readings. However, I used the same methodology to assess each technique at about the same time, so I have similar data and user experience to compare.

Ketones in the blood test


You obtain a measurement of the quantity of -hydroxybutyrate circulating in your blood when you purchase a ketone meter. It involves the collection of a very tiny drop of blood from the finger for analysis, but is otherwise fast and simple.

The blood ketone meters need a battery (included), however they do not require charging or being connected into a power outlet. A strip (about $1 per strip) and disposable lancets are required for each test.

I’ve previously tested his ketone levels in his blood. They followed commercial laboratory testing for -hydroxybutyrate in their research. So, in this experiment, I compared various ketone measures to blood ketone levels using the award-winning Keto Mojo Meter.

Test for ketones in the breath


There are many gadgets on the market that can detect the presence of acetone, a ketone found in the breath. In terms of design and pricing, they are very different. Ketonix, Keto Stat, and LEVL were the three I tried.


Before you may use Ketonix, you must first configure it. The gadget takes approximately 12 hours to charge, and you must first download and connect the app with your device on your smartphone before you can begin measuring.

It’s worth noting that Ketonix has a rechargeable battery and can therefore be used without the need of a power outlet…. useful for camping, etc. I tried it out, and although aligning the battery with the device so it could be connected correctly was a bit difficult, it worked well once it did.


To obtain a result, just exhale deeply – from the bottom of your lungs into the gadget – once you’ve set up the equipment. This isn’t the same as inhaling deeply! The guidelines stress squeezing all of the air out of your lungs using your muscles.

I had to quit and reopen the app many times while testing to get it to load and function correctly. To restart it, I had to disconnect it and plug it back in.

Is it possible to test with Ketonix at any time? Not at all. Before testing, the manufacturer suggests waiting until the alcohol is fully gone from your system. Even a glass of wine, in my experience, may substantially distort the test results, suggesting that the sensor has trouble discriminating between alcohol and acetone.

Keto Stat

Installing the Keto Stat is simple; just insert a triple A battery.

The time begins to count down once the device is switched on. Exhale deeply for 10 seconds when it hits zero.


Before using LEVL, it must be fine-tuned. It must be charged within 24 hours, and you must first download and connect the app with your device before you can begin reading.

LEVL must be calibrated as well, which takes around 10 minutes. Although the procedure is straightforward, you must first push the mode button in a particular sequence, then insert test gas from two cylinders into the breathing capsule and calibrate the device with each gas. This may not be the gadget for you if you are afraid of mechanics or following instructions. Every two weeks, the calibration should be repeated (and whenever you unplug the unit for more than a few hours).


Simply open the lid and click the mode button to choose the user after calibration. Exhale into the test capsule, put the capsule inside the device, and shut the lid after holding your breath for at least 5 seconds.

LEVL also provides a monthly sensor module replacement ($50). To accomplish this, you’ll need an Allen key (included) and a Phillips screwdriver, as well as the ability to push the mode button in a certain pattern. The directions are straightforward once again, although this degree of mechanical labor is not for everyone.

Because the LEVL does not have a battery, it can only be operated when plugged into an electrical outlet.

Ketone analysis in the urine


Urine strips may be used to identify the ketone acetoacetate, which is a simple method to test for ketosis. On Amazon, you’ll find a plethora of commercial brands. Kiss My Keto, Nurse Hatty, Smack Fat, and Top Notch were the four products I tried.

All of the urine test strips are almost identical, with the exception that the Nurse Hatty strips are somewhat longer (4.25 vs. 3.5), making them significantly more suited for mid-range testing. To test for acetoacetate, all brands utilize the same chemical, sodium nitroprusside (7.1 percent for most brands, 7.7 percent for Nurse Hatty).

The directions were not the same. After dipping the ketone strip in urine for 1-2 seconds, two companies, Top Notch and Kiss My Keto, offer to read it for 15 seconds. The band had to wait 40 seconds before playing at the Nurse Hatty brand. The Smack Fat brand advises dipping the strip for 40 seconds in a urine sample. (Note that the 15-40 second soak and wait technique also works with Smack Fat strips.) Anyway, I followed the package’s directions.

2. Accuracy of measurement

How precise and dependable were the various methods? The only way to know for sure is to create a simple and repeatable experimental protocol that is same for each technique. Then, in the context of accuracy, I’ll look at two qualities: accuracy and consistency, and how they vary depending on the testing technique.

Stand for testing

I used a keto mojo machine to take two ketone levels from the same blood sample after 12-14 hours of fasting. For breath and urine tests, these blood ketone levels were utilized as a reference. (I believe these readings are quite reliable, since the meter performed well in many comparisons to a lab test for -hydroxybutyrate.) I used the breathalyzer apparatus four times for each unit right after the blood test. Then I snatched up the urine strips and collected four readings for each brand. Finally, I tested my blood and Keto-Mojo gave me two additional readings.

This process was repeated five times on five separate occasions.

The experiment’s repeatable design enabled me to assess the accuracy and internal consistency of the ketone meters several times (4 measurements in 4 trials, for a total of 16 measurements for each brand).

I chose to test the brands while in full ketosis, moderate ketosis (twice), and out of ketosis to see how they performed under various circumstances. It will also assist me in determining if the data are providing me with the information I seek: am I in ketosis, and if so, to what extent?

With the exception of the Keto Stat breathalyzer, which proved totally useless, all of the brands tested provided acceptable readings of my ketosis levels, as you can see from the data above. Keto mojo, on the other hand, disappointed with higher-than-expected results in the ketosis exit test.

Keto Mojo

I ate carbohydrates for a few days for the fourth test, expecting to fall out of ketosis. Although the keto mojo machine indicated that I was in ketosis, additional tests revealed that I was not. I assumed it was a fluke, so I ate more bread the following day and tried again (5th test as a bonus). Again, the degree of ketosis varied, but it was high enough to suggest moderate ketosis, while other techniques showed no ketosis.

At that time, I took out another blood reader (which I had on hand from a previous test that instructed me to measure ketones in the blood) and received values that matched the breath and urine test findings. It seems that my reference to keto mojo was incorrect. Why? It’s difficult to say. Given the findings of the prior experiment, I can only conclude that the 50 test strips I purchased for the current experiment were somewhat different. Perhaps the lesson here is that if anything doesn’t add up, you may have an issue with the gadget, regardless of how you test it.

Blazers with a ketogenic diet

The LEVL and the Ketonix are meant to be measuring the same thing (the concentration of acetone in exhaled air, in parts per million). However, the outcomes of the two technologies are vastly different. Which option is the correct one? I’m not sure, and I’m not sure it matters. If you purchase one, you can find out what the figures imply for you by testing it repeatedly under various circumstances.

Therapeutic ketosis, according to Ketonix, starts at 4.0 parts per million. This is consistent with the findings of the tests I performed. The first and second tests revealed values considerably over 4.0 ppm, while the third test was on the verge of being positive. The latest two tests came in at less than 4.0 parts per million.

According to LEVL, fat burning begins at 2.0 parts per million, which implies I was never out of fat burning. When I placed the breathing capsule in the machine without exhaling, the only reading below 3.6 was 0.0. However, considering the individual variations, I believe the LEVL values were quite stable. My LVED increases as my ketosis level decreases.

The four kinds of urine strips were almost indistinguishable from one another and performed similarly. As a result, I classify it as a consumer product; I believe any respectable brand would suffice, and you may shop based on price.

The color codes used to identify the color of Kiss My Keto brand stripes reveal that the negative is a creamy, less meaty hue…. Based on the colors I’ve seen in the comics, I feel that other companies’ color schemes are more accurate.

Measurement precision

The test techniques vary in terms of accuracy, which refers to the precision with which the ketone measurements are taken.

Urine strips provide a color value, while digital meters (blood and breath) provide a digital value. If you value precision, the inaccuracy of urine strip measurements may irritate you; despite the directional accuracy, the color may sometimes fall between the hues in the chart. Finally, pee strips provide an estimate of your status rather than a precise assessment.

Test #1, Test #2, Test #3, Test #4, and Test #5


The accuracy of urine test strips is a subject of much debate. Acetoacetate levels in the urine vary from person to person, and even within the same individual, there is evidence that when the body becomes used to burning ketones, there is less acetoacetate in the urine.

According to The Art and Science of Low-Carbohydrate Living (p. 164), as a person’s adaptation to keto develops, his or her urine acetoacetate level may decrease while his or her blood -hydroxybutyrate level stays constant. As a result, urine strips may or may not be effective for you. In other words, even though I was in ketosis for the most of the time, there was enough acetoacetate in my urine to provide a decent indicator of my ketosis level.


Internal consistency is another element of accuracy. Do I receive the same result whether I test my blood, breath, or urine at the same time? As a result, in each test scenario, I tried each technique four times.

According to this metric, all of the test techniques performed well. Keto-Mojo struggled, particularly in Test 5, when he failed to progress at all.

The precise ketonix levels in each test varied somewhat across the four data points, but only within a limited range. There was internal consistency in whether I was in severe ketosis, moderate ketosis, or out of ketosis with each test.

The LEVL device fluctuated at each test point as well, but was internally consistent: the mean readings gradually dropped as the ketosis levels fell.

Finally, the urine test strips were extremely consistent from test to test. When I dipped four strips into a urine sample at a time, the color was consistent throughout all four strips (and also for all four brands).

Keto Stat was so reliable that it consistently returned a result of 0.00 on every test, regardless of ketosis level, rendering it virtually worthless. That’s an excessive amount of consistency! He will be disqualified as a result of this.

3. Price

When considering whether or not to use a testing system, a prospective client should evaluate the overall cost of the system, which includes the cost of the original equipment investment (if any) as well as the continuing cost of any extra services needed (e.g. in the case of blood ketone meters, additional test strips). Depending on the user, the number of tests needed varies significantly.
